  • The Sovereign Tech Agency's mission: to strengthen the foundations of an open and free digital world. We see open digital infrastructure as the roads and bridges of our digital society – essential for the flow of information, for government, industry, and innovation. At the heart of this infrastructure is free and open source software, which is indispensable for a democratic society and has established itself as the world's most successful software development model.

With a commission from the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action, we invest in critical open source software, develop programs and instruments that sustainably secure the open source ecosystem, and support the people behind the code. We are the only organization of our kind in Europe, and we are leading the way on how governments engage with digital infrastructure and open source technology. Our vision: digital resilience, technological diversity, and the safeguarding of digital public services. Together, we are shaping a sovereign digital future.

Our team is growing, that’s why the Sovereign Tech Agency is looking for a public interest technologist to join the Tech & Investments team.

Your work is central to advocating for – and putting into action – the public investments in the open source components that form the backbone of our modern digital ecosystem.

We are looking for a technical expert who is also driven by the opportunity to make a meaningful impact on the public interest and the open source ecosystem. You will help identify, evaluate, and support critical open digital infrastructure technologies like operating systems, software libraries, and developer tools that prioritize the security, resilience, technological diversity of our digital infrastructure, and support the people behind the code.

    • Actively contribute to discussions and decisions around investment strategies and program execution
    • Lead technical evaluations during project commissioning, ensuring alignment with our goals and criteria
    • Develop, improve, and manage further programs for the Sovereign Tech Agency's portfolio

    Outreach, Networking, and Community Engagement

    • Represent the Sovereign Tech Agency at industry conferences, workshops, and events
    • Write and contribute to blog posts, opinion pieces, explainers, and articles
    • Engage with international stakeholders, including standards bodies, working groups, and policy forums, to further the Sovereign Tech Agency’s mission
    • Build and maintain relationships across open source communities
    • Facilitate meaningful dialogue between technical and non-technical stakeholders, promoting a better understanding of the societal impact of open digital infrastructure technologies

    Qualifikation

    Technical Expertise

    • Strong expertise in open source technologies and software development, with a deep understanding of their societal impact
    • A keen interest in emerging technologies that can promote security, resilience, and technological diversity for the public good
    • Eager to stay on top of trends in open digital infrastructure and continuously expand your knowledge in the field

    Communication and Collaboration

    • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to explain complex technical and societal concepts in an accessible manner to diverse stakeholders, including policymakers, developers, and the public
    • Proficient in written and spoken English, with experience writing reports, articles, and other content
    • Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage effectively with diverse stakeholders, from tech communities to government agencies and the wider society
    • Working independently: Your work is self-directed, proactive, organized, and detail-oriented, utilizing modern collaboration tools
    • Team player: you enjoy collaborating with coworkers, active and open communication, and both giving and receiving feedback.

For us, your motivation is as important as your resume. We explicitly welcome applications that do not meet all requirements. We would also be happy to learn more about additional skills and attributes in your cover letter that are not listed here but are relevant to the position.
