About the Job
We are seeking a highly skilled and innovative Photonic Design Engineer (f/m/d) to join one of our portfolio companies and play a crucial part in the development and optimization of cutting-edge graphene-based, high-speed optical transceiver platform.
In your day to day work you’ll ensure the performance, efficiency, and scalability of the devices, achieving low loss and high yield.

In this role, you’ll:
- Design and develop passive photonic components in silicon nitride for applications such as multiplexing and fiber-to-chip coupling
- Create, layout, and update Process Design Kit (PDK) building blocks as required, ensuring their accuracy and functionality.
- Develop test structures to facilitate accurate verification of device models.
- Perform inverse design and benchmark solutions against alternative designs to ensure optimal performance.
- Collaborate closely with the characterization team to acquire and analyze statistical data, ensuring accurate performance validation and improvement
Your Profile
- PhD in a relevant field or a minimum of 3 years of professional experience in integrated photonics
- Proficiency in using Lumerical products such as MODE, FDTD, and Multiphysics
- Strong programming skills in Python, along with experience using Git for version control
- Hands-on experience with layout software such as gdsfactory, Nazca, or OptoDesigner
- Experience with inverse design methodologies is an advantage
- Practical characterization experience in an optical lab is a plus
- Familiarity with optical design software, particularly Zemax, is a plus
Please note that we’re looking for support in the Aachen office of our portfolio company. Eligibility to work in the EU is required.
