    The energy transition, moving from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources, is at the centre of a reaching global Net Zero targets - ensuring a liveable future for us and those to come. As a result, the European market for green energy generation and transportation is entering a phase of rapid expansion, with investments exceeding €1.1 trillion by 2030.

    While in general public sentiment towards the energy transition is positive, concrete local energy infrastructure projects are often met with low public acceptance, expressed through protests, lawsuits and other forms of resistance. The resulting project delays, cost overruns, and even cancellations are not only a business risk, but also endanger a timely and successful energy transition. Despite its severty, the locally specific causes of low acceptance remain poorly understood, leaving project developers to navigate almost blindly.

    AVALY addresses this challenge with a Machine Learning-based software solution, backed by scientific findings from environmental psychology. By analyzing local needs and challenges underlying low acceptance, we provide companies with actionable insights and targeted measures to boost public acceptance of energy infrastructure projects.

    Tasks

    Shape the MVP development of our AI-based acceptance management software

    As our Founding Engineer – Data Science Focus (f/m/d), you will play a key role in designing and building the software infrastructure that empowers companies to boost public acceptance of sustainable energy infrastructure projects. We are looking for a curious and motivated individual, eager to use and grow their software dev. skills to help put people into the centre of our energy transition and to reach Net Zero targets.

    Your challenges:

    As a pre-MVP startup, joining our Engineering team means contributing to the foundation of Avaly’s software. Here’s what you’ll be doing:

    • Machine Learning Model Development: Build, train, and deploy machine learning models with a focus on predictive data analysis, statistical methods, and feature importance evaluations.
    • Data Integration & Processing: Expand model robustness by analyzing which available data sources are suitable for the task, integrating those data sources (including regional and geospatial datasets) and preprocessing data from diverse raw data sources to finished ML products.
    • Software Development: Contribute to building scalable and maintainable software architectures tailored to machine learning-based solutions.
    • Strategic Vision: Adapting the product roadmap according to user needs and in alignment with technical feasibility.
    • (Potentially) Cloud Infrastructure Setup: Design and implement scalable, cloud-based architectures for deploying secure and efficient ML solutions (e.g., AWS, Azure).
    • (Potentially) Sentiment Analysis & Social Listening: Design and implement sentiment analysis pipelines for social media data, press data and unstructured text files from clients using NLP and other techniques, integrating results into ML workflows.

    Tech Stack

    • Our tech stack is evolving, and as an early member, you’ll help shape its future!
    • Core tools currently include Python (Pandas, Scikit-learn, PyTorch); Potentially SQL for (cloud) data engineering.

    • Data Savviness: Proficiency in Python and familiarity with data-centric libraries (e.g., Pandas, Scikit-learn, PyTorch).
    • Machine Learning & Data Science Expertise (4+ years) : Proficiency in building, training, and deploying ML models, with significant experience in predictive data analysis, statistical methods, and potentially NLP.
    • Growth Mindset: Willingness to wear multiple hats, tackle new challenges, learn new skills and technologies, leading the technical product development.
    • Entrepreneurial Spirit: You thrive in a fast-paced startup setting, embracing a strong, yet healthy work ethic and can easily adapt. Your hands-on approach and proactive mindset make you a natural and resilient problem-solver. Previous working experience in start-ups is a big plus.
    • Product Passion: You are eager to build a digital product that solves a real problem, driving the energy transition forward, and never lose touch of customer needs and pain points.
    • (Bonus) Software Engineering Knowledge: Understanding of software engineering fundamentals, including version control, testing frameworks, and build systems.
